I am really excited about being at Lewis Open
Magnet for the sixth year! This school has a wonderful history of
academic success and I hope to celebrate more success with your
students.
Our campus improvement plan has been expanded
as a Title I plan this year. We want to improve our Library and become
a real resource center for learning. We have added computers to all
classrooms so that each teacher has a computer center available
daily for integration of technology activities. Teachers are
receiving training to refine their technology skills for record
keeping, data analysis, student assessments and project-based
learning.
Our Reading, Writing and Math goals are listed
below:
Reading
All students will demonstrate
effective communications skills by analyzing, summarizing and
comprehending what is read in a variety of texts.
A. Students will identify the text structure
(sequence, problem-solving, compare/contrast, cause/effect,
description).
B. Students will retell main ideas or events
with supporting details in a variety of texts such as expository,
narrative, and persuasive.
C. Students will distinguish between fact and
opinion in various texts.
Our goal is to reduce the number of students at
meets standards by 3% and increase the number of students in the
exemplary category by 4%.
Writing
All students will write by
generating, selecting, reviewing ideas resulting in effective
communication for different occasions, audiences and purposes with
clarification by word choice and conventions.
Our goal is to maintain and meet the state mean
for Proficient and Above.

All students will recognize the
same situation cam be represented in more than one way in real life
situations for problem-solving.
Standard 3 Geometry
Benchmark 2 Measurement and Estimation
All students will apply appropriate
measurements and measurement formulas to solve problems of length,
weight, time, perimeter and area.
Standard 4 Data
Benchmark 2 Statistics
All students will use statistical measures of
data using whole numbers to make reasonable inferences and
predictions using Minimum and Maximum value; range, median, mode,
and mean of a data set.
We will increase the number of student from
proficient to advanced by 5%.
I have learned a lot for the Lewis Community
and I hope you are willing to help us on our journey to excellence.
I will continue to be supportive of good citizenship and life long
learning. My number one responsibility is to maintain the Mission,
Vision and Values of Lewis Open Magnet.
Mission:
The purpose of Lewis Open Magnet is to educate
each student to his/her full potential in a supportive environment
that challenges and encourages each student to be an independent and
responsible citizen.
Vision:
All students are capable of meeting curriculum
and behavioral standards given support from school and home. This
is done through the core of an Open Philosophy. Students are valued
as individuals but adhere to the responsibilities of the group to
support an active learning environment. The Open Philosophy requires
support for the values of honesty, integrity, mutual respect and
hard work. The Open School is a delivery method for the core
standards that are valued by the District. Open classrooms are
characterized by small group, whole group and multi-age groupings.
Classrooms are set up using tables to facilitate team and
cooperative activities. Kagan is a core strategy for our
cooperative learning. Open classrooms are active, student-centered,
and project based. Quality teachers facility the learning using
many collaborative strategies. Individual students are expected to
set personal goals but recognize the importance of group
participation and group success.
Values and Beliefs:
Learning and Life are a journey not a race.
All students learn progressively through a logical sequence of
skills. Students are encouraged to progress at their own rate of
learning but move at least one academic year annually. Successful
students in an Open Magnet are independent learners who benefit from
multiple groupings, cooperative and independent work. Teachers are
viewed as facilitators. Teachers are confident and competent to work
in teams. Learning occurs through project or performance
demonstrations. Students are flexible, responsible and caring. They
take responsibility to protect the learning environment. Parents
are active participants in the learning process. Core beliefs are
that students are Attentive, Cooperative, Respectful and Kind.
Character education is embedded in every academic area. Instruction
is organized through mixed age groups; process learning through
projects; group conferencing; and participatory decision-making
involving children and families.
In 2009-2010, Staff and Parents reviewed the
expectations of behaviors which support our core beliefs and the
Open Philosophy.
Behavior Expectations for Staff include:
Sharing ideas on teams; Recognizing efforts and success; Modeling
positive behavior; Involvement in the many activities at Lewis;
Building on strengths; Being committed; Listening actively; Change
as needed.
Behavior expectations for Parents
include: Involved in decision-making at many levels; Discuss things;
Be accessible; Communicate in a timely fashion; Be supportive; Be
responsible by having students at school, healthy and on time;
Celebrate student success; Follow through.
Behavior expectations for Students
include: Set goals that are achievable; Problem solve; Communicate
positively; Come to school prepared to learn; Do the right thing
when no one is watching; Use manners; Listen; Help others;
Cooperate; Honestly do your best.
