Where Inquiring Minds Grow!

New Lewis Open Magnet and South Elementary

Many changes are taking place on our campus! The construction is ongoing as we are getting ready for the 2012 school year with a brand new building. The school will feature a library, group study areas, an art room with an outdoor patio, separate cafeteria and multipurpose room (and storm shelter). The existing building will be torn down upon the completion of the new building. The Open Magnet offers a creative, open approach to learning. Students enjoy less structure and learn to grow in their own ways in this environment. Our students are successful problem solvers, independent and highly motivated. Lewis is seeing progress as the new building is under construction.
Service Learning in December

At Lewis we are striving to provide opportunities for our students to be involved in Service Learning projects on a school, local and international level. Our United Way Campaign raised over $250 which will help many families in our local community. Our December project  reached out to children in other countries through the Operation Christmas Child Program. We participated by filling shoeboxes with items such as school supplies and personal hygiene items. These shoeboxes were sent around the world to children who are not as fortunate as us.  We were able to track several of the boxes so that the students ccould follow it and learn about the country that it was sent to. Our boxes went to Mexico and made many children very happy.

Lewis Recieves Challenge Award

Lewis Open Magnet was awarded a Certificate of Recognition in the Challenge Award Program.  The award recognizes schools for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments based on the Kansas Assessment results from the spring of 2011.

For each of the fourteen assessments, 60 state schools meeting the Challenge Award criteria were identified as high performing.  Lewis is recognized for closing the achievement gap in 3rd grade reading and 5th grade reading. WE are all very proud of this recognition and the hard work that the students demonstrated during last year’s assessments.
